Travel advice: card fraud; tolls in Portugal; seaside cottages; Cyprus in spring

    Gill Charlton replies
This didn’t sound right to me. The STA Travel Card is managed by Tuxedo Money Solutions, which immediately apologised for the error made by its call-centre staff. It has now refunded the £450 stolen from your son’s account. It appears that the call handler thought you were requesting reimbursement of money still on the card after a fraud had taken place. Tuxedo says that the cloning of prepaid cards is very rare because customers don’t usually have enough funds in the account to make it worthwhile. As soon as its fraud team is satisfied that the fraudulent transactions are not the fault of the cardholder, the money is quickly repaid. “We always err on the side of the customer,” a Tuxedo Money spokesman said. “For us to claim negligence to refuse a refund, we would have to be pretty sure that the customer had colluded in the fraud.”
