It was a freak accident. If Brett Sloppy, the San Marcos man who was driving the truck, had been going a just the slightest bit faster or slower, his tire wouldn’t have hit a rock at the bottom of a jump, said Sloppy’s mother, Lynne Sloppy, who witnessed the accident.
The rock, which protruded about a foot high, caused the truck’s steering system to fail and it overturned, plowing into spectators who crowded around the course.
The survivors of almost all of those who died are suing. So is Lynne Sloppy, who like the rest blame the federal Bureau of Land Management for failing to enforce rules that would have kept the spectators at a safe distance. They are also suing Mojave Desert Racing (MDR) of South El Monte, which organized the California 200 race.
