A late winter storm caused multiple car crashes in Milwaukee and throughout the state yesterday. The Journal Sentinel reports that least 14 crashes were reported on the Milwaukee County highway system between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. yesterday. More than 70 crashes were reported in Washington County.
Slick roads are a large contributing factor to car accidents in the Milwaukee area. Although a driver may drive at or under the speed limit, many drivers do not slow down enough to maintain control of their vehicles during slick road conditions. These negligent drivers frequently lose control of their vehicles and cause serious car accidents.
...Duke is accused of driving drunk, and causing a deadly crash near 27th and St. Paul on New Year’s morning. Ed and Jean Thaves of New Berlin were killed at the scene.
Duke fled the scene after the accident, but was later turned in to police by family members. He is charged with nine felony counts, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Last month, Duke pleaded not guilty and waived his preliminary hearing, which means he is bound over for trial.
Thursday morning, Duke’s attorneys were planning to ask the judge for a significant reduction in bail. However, the defense attorney, instead, requested a competency evaluation from medical experts before going forward. The bail motion has been withdrawn; attorney’s did not request reduction yet.
“Kelly Duke sustained only minor injuries as a result of the accident that killed my dad and stepmother. He was competent enough to flee from the scene and run the nearly two miles to his home. On January 24, Duke asked the court for a new defense attorney,” said Edwin Thaves, the son of Ed Thaves, who believes the move was a stall tactic.
