Josh says: “The Artist” seemed like a recipe for disaster. It’s a movie about movies (strike one) in black and white (strike two) and, oh yea, it’s silent (strike three) with intertitles. However, this risky formula paid off for French director Michel Hazanavicius .
The film tells a great story and has a number of great moments that may not have played as well in a talkie. Peppy Miller’s romantic encounter with a suit coat is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a movie this Oscar season.
That being said, let’s not make this a trend. Let “The Artist” have the title of the modern silent film. One is plenty.
Also, it was a bit of a hassle having to chase the movie to Flint. I realize it is hard to get short run prints in Midland, but the studios really need to push out more prints after nominees are announced to satisfy the curious — or find other ways to let wanna-be critics like myself and Virginia see all the films before awards night.
This will probably win the big trophy come Sunday, and I’d be OK with that. There is a lot of close competition this year and I had a hard time picking a favorite, so I took the easy route and went with “The Artist.”
