These findings, reported by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), should be incorporated into the standard of care for service members wounded on the battlefield and in critical care units nationwide treating for patients with head injuries.

"I had no idea who I was or where I was," Sterner said.
She drove to her doctor's office and couldn't comprehend the words on a poster on the wall. Her doctor took her keys, and Sterner called for a ride to the emergency room to have CT scan. She went to a neurologist the next day. She had suffered a severe concussion.
The injury, often associated with high-impact sports, mentally and physically incapacitated Sterner for several months.
She couldn't read or multitask. She had trouble completing chores. If she was doing laundry and the phone rang, she didn't remember that she had started a load of wash. She often forgot if she added certain ingredients while cooking and had to start recipes over.
She couldn't work. A typical day as principal is full of interruptions, prioritizing and conversations. It hurt her to not see the students finish the school year. She feared she wouldn't regain the skills she needed to successfully
