It was with a heavy heart that I read about six young girls dying in a horrific accident (GDN, February 26). Although the exact details are still unknown, wet road conditions, speed and bad cornering seem to have been some of the reasons. As Bahrain is generally dry, drivers' unfamiliarity with wet road conditions pose a great hazard, leading to accidents.
Therefore, as an engineer, with 45 years of driving experience in many countries, including 20 in Bahrain, I can offer this advice.
Slow in - fast out: Cornering may be considered a manoeuvre, with which a high degree of risk is always associated. The motto to be followed may be summarized as 'slow in - fast out'. It is a golden rule that can keep you out of trouble under all conditions.
In the 'slow in - fast out' technique, as you approach a corner (a bend on the road), you have to slow down gradually by smoothly pressing the brake pedal. Once you enter the corner, you must keep your foot off the brake pedal and come out of the corner with your foot on the accelerator, achieving a higher speed than the speed of entry.
