In the meantime, Hess said between 175-200 inmates remain in other county lockups."Most of them are minimum custody inmates," said Hess. "They've probably gone through court, or they don't have a court date for months ahead. We're trying to minimize the going back and forth."
Even though the crane missed the main prisoner section of the jail, it caused water and electrical problems and there are still concerns about safety.
"We have a heat issue, but we're not going to repair that 'til we're confident that we're not going to have more damage by removing the crane," said Hess.
Locking someone up isn't cheap. Neighboring jails are charging Kent County to keep their inmates.
Add repair and other costs associated with the accident, and county officials expect the cleanup to cost big money.
"We anticipate the insurance company will pay those, but is going to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars," said Hess.
Hess said that he's "pretty confident" that tax payers won't have to foot the bill.
