It should be noted that the CICA state that “For some applications there may have been more than one reason for refusal meaning the total as per the table is higher than the number disallowed”. Therefore there may be some overlap between the categories.
According to these figures, 1,196 claims were denied because they were submitted more than two years after the original incident. 1,610 claims were denied because the claimant failed to report without delay. If there is no overlap despite the warning given above, this would total 2,806 cases.
Similarly, 3,200 claims were denied for conduct, whilst 3,864 claims were denied because the claimant had a criminal record. Assuming no overlap, this would total 7,064 claims.
However, if these are the figures used by the Mirror, it appears they have added the number of instances where there is a failure to cooperate with the police to the number of cases where there is a “failure to cooperate with the Authority”. The Authority is likely to refer to the CICA, which does not assist in prosecutions. The total number of claims in these two categories does amount to 7,109, but it is inaccurate to say that this is the number of cases which were “stopped due to the victim failing to assist police in bringing a prosecution”.
