Never have the horrors and fatal consequences of such behavior been so evident as the tales told in a court case this week in which a drunken driver plowed into two men pushing a disabled van on an interstate exit. One man, Darren Jones, was killed, another, Carl Wheeler, paralyzed and unable to speak or care for himself for life. Three families have been destroyed. As Jones’ 8-year-old sister, Heather wrote to the court, “Until I go to heaven, this will impact my life.” Curtis Lynn Lutterloh will face five years in prison for his poor choice, but neither of his victims will ever enjoy life again. Shattering.

    THUMBS UP to the financial stewardship of Burlington ’s government that ranked the city sixth of 25 of the largest cities in the state in a recent study. University of North Carolina finance professor Michael Jacobs’ “N.C. Stewardship Index” ranked the 25 cities on how well they take care of taxpayers’ money, based on the price of basic municipality-provided necessities — water and sewer — and city and county taxes.  It’s nearly impossible to come up with a perfect study examining which city is best, based on all provided services and departments, because of different constraints, but Burlington’s investments are proving to be solid — or at least more solid then some spendthrift peers.
