Letter: Negron offering reasonable solution to PIP controversy
Every time our Legislature meets, there is a massive tug-of-war between auto insurance carriers who want to slash benefits (read: not pay claims) on personal injury protection insurance and health care providers that want PIP left alone. Florida is one of the few remaining states in which your auto insurance pays your medical bills no matter who caused the accident.
Insurers decry PIP, saying it is corrupt with staged accidents and faked injuries. Health care providers, which include clinics and doctors, argue for greater anti-fraud enforcement that won't punish honest claimants.
It's a no-win situation. Each session, both sides introduce PIP bills, and neither will agree to meet in the middle.
Is there a PIP problem? It depends on whom you listen to and whose numbers are accurate. Insurers are suspicious of nearly every claim; a House bill would limit PIP payments to hospital treatment within 72 hours of an accident, with a small allowance for outside care.
