Farm Worker Seriously Injured in fall from Height Accident
A self-employed farm worker suffered serious personal injury , after falling a distance of almost five metres through a shed roof.
Twenty four year old James Best, of Blisland, in Cornwall, was working for Martin Dairy Ltd, at a farm in Washaway, near Bodmin and was helping to remove fibre cement sheets from the roof of a shed.
Unfortunately the fragile roof gave way and Mr. Best plummeted a distance of almost five metres onto the solid concrete floor beneath.
The farm worker suffered serious injuries in the fall including a broken jaw, a broken arm and a damaged eye socket.
Bodmin Magistrates’ Court was told that fibre cement roofs, often used in commercial properties are not designed to support a person’s weight and are well known for their fragility.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the condition of the fragile shed roof had not been assessed prior to the start of the demolition work and there was no written plan of works, which is a legal requirement.
