The first definition listed for “accident” in most dictionaries is “an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance.” However, that is not what we normally think of when we hear “accident” in connection to a workplace setting. What generally comes to mind instead is the definition found further down the list: “an unfortunate event resulting especially from carelessness or ignorance.” Whichever the case, when an accident occurs in the workplace immediate action must be taken to ensure the unfortunate event doesn’t occur again and that something positive is taken from the situation.

OSHA investigating worker death
SHELTON -- Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating if there were any workplace violations at a condominium complex where a worker fell to his death Tuesday.
The worker, identified Tuesday as Francisco Amaral , 46, of Bridgeport, fell 39 feet from the rear roof of a unit at Jean Court at the Sunwood condominium complex around noon. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital , where he later died, according to police.
Ted Fitzgerald, a spokesman for OSHA, said an investigation has been opened to review the incident. He said an inspector from OSHA's Bridgeport office was on the scene within a half hour of the incident.
Fitzgerald said there is no timetable of how long it will take to finish the investigation, but said by law it must be completed within 180 days.
Police are also investigating the incident.
The website of County Management Services , which manages Sunwood, says the complex is in the process of a major transformation with new roofs, carpentry and painting of buildings all on the agenda for 2012.
