    It works, but so what?

I was really astounded by an editorial in the MWDN this weekend which was a paean to colonoscopies. The editorial described the procedure, and that it catches cancers early, but it was also grossly irresponsible in failing to mention the dangers of the procedure, as there are risks in every medical procedure. Many of the cases which malpractice lawyers are now seeing come from an over exuberance for what are billed as simple tests, but which severe risks of complication. I know of one case from about ten years ago in which a major Boston hospital almost killed someone with a high contract cat scan, when it turned out that one of the triggers for the patient’s illness was a toxic reaction to iodine, which is used in large quantities in the test. The doctor stated after the fact that it didn’t occur to him that the test might be dangerous, and besides, these tests are now routinely performed by technicians who aren’t trained to recognize the early warning signs of trouble.  All medical procedures have risks, and nothing is routine.
