    “Drifted off the main travel portion of the roadway” and drove into a metal guardrail at the eastbround Van Nuys Boulevard offramp.  The officer died died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center two hours after the wreck.

    “The guard rail penetrated the interior of the pickup, pushing both the driver’s seat and its occupant out the rear window,” said the California Hyway Patrol statement.

    He was found seriously injured about 3:20 a.m., still being belted into the drivers’s seat which had been forced out of the pickup as it struck the guard rail according to LAPD Sgt. Carl Taylor.

    Medical care claim $2.3M deal eyed

    County leaders this week will consider approval of a $2.3 million medical malpractice settlement in a lawsuit brought by a patient who was treated at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey.

    Robert Vasquez filed the lawsuit in August 2010 after being admitted to the facility for rehabilitation.

    In legal documents, he claims staff members discharged him to spend the holidays with his family after he had fallen in the restroom.

    Staff conducted an evaluation after the fall, and determined he showed no signs of brain trauma or other injury. While at home, however, Vasquez suffered bleeding in his brain.

    He sued Los Angeles County, which runs the facility, alleging staff members failed to conduct a thorough examination before his discharge.

    If approved, the settlement includes $2.3 million to the patient, as well as assumption of a Medi-Cal lien of $194,504 and waiver of Vasquez's hospital bill of $634,026.
