Lawyers with a solo practice have enough expenses to worry about: rent, utilities, bar and other association fees, maybe even an assistant’s salary. An expense some don’t spend much time thinking about but probably should? Insurance.
As with most other professions — and as with most people in any walk of life — solos can buy as much insurance as they want. But while some types of coverage are marginal for solos, some can be crucial.
“What makes people not able to sleep at night is different for everyone,” said Debra McLain, a longtime risk management and insurance consultant who is now a general practice attorney in Minnetonka. “You have to assess your own risk management — sometimes lawyers don’t know what they should be looking at.”
At the top of the insurance shopping list is professional liability insurance. Every lawyer makes mistakes in the course of his or her practice, and it’s crucial to be protected from a malpractice suit or other expenses when a client relationship goes bad.
