The Health Minister, Andrew Lansley, has started an investigation this week into decisions made by health clinics to abort foetuses on the basis of gender. It is likely, however, that this sort of abuse of the powers given to doctors under the Abortion Act 1967 has been going on for decades.
The problem is not just with doctors but, pressingly, the open and vague basis upon which abortion can be allowed under the Abortion Act 1967. It is also worth remembering that the legislation that legalised abortion was never raised as an election issue, but pushed through via the back door using a Private Members Bill by a single MP.
The creation of this vague legislation did not, however, intend to encourage the proliferation of abortions (a point repeatedly made by its creator Lord David Steel).
