HUNTINGTON - A vehicle damaged a utility pole on Route 112 Friday night, leaving the town without its emergency 911 system for most of the weekend and some 200 Verizon customers without land-line phone service.
The service was fully restored by Sunday afternoon, a couple of days ahead of schedule, said Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro.
Meanwhile, State Police arrested Nathan Callahan, 21, of Chester, on charges related to the hit-and-run accident, including operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of accident.
Callahan was heading northbound on Route 112 at about 11:20 p.m. when he struck a vehicle stopped at a red light, said Sgt. Michael Popovics of the state police.
Callahan fled the scene of that accident and a short time later lost control of his Jeep Wrangler, which rolled over and struck the utility pole in front of the library. Popovics said the top half of the pole was suspended in the air with cables on the ground and across the vehicle.
