He said the vast majority of the North Lanarkshire claims were still before the employment tribunals.
The figure includes several hundred former administrative, professional, technical and clerical staff – many of them women – whom, he said, had still to be made any offer of settlement. There were also many male workers with perfectly valid equal pay claims that remained outstanding.
Mr Irvine said other councils had settled similar claims. They include Edinburgh Council, who last month conceded defeat to around 400 women employed as classroom assistants, social care workers, librarians and nursery nurses. The Edinburgh authority had refused to pay them the same amount as male colleagues in different posts doing similar work
