Actually, hold on. No, he didn’t say he supported the oil sands. He said, “we are very, very proud of the work that’s being done by Canadians in every part of Canada, in every province and territory to strengthen our country.” No mention of the oil sands specifically. In fact, no pull back at all on what he said on Monday, which was, “If I had my preferences” between a rapidly developing oil industry in Alberta and lower dollar, “I stand with the lower dollar.”
So, it looks like Mr. McGuinty stands by his support for a lower dollar and in favour of economic development all over the country. He didn’t actually withdraw the oil sands comment. The only thing he regrets, apparently, is that occasionally a politician says things that don’t “convey exactly what you want to say.” So what did he really want to say? He doesn’t say. He certainly was not attempting, in his original comment, to announce that he is “very, very proud of the work that’s being done by Canadians in every part of Canada.” No content in that.
