I remember back in the day that the worst words a pitcher could hear were “rotator cuff”. Using those two words together was worse than cursing.
Of course, “rotator cuff” on its own is completely harmless — it is an anatomical phrase the loosely describes an area of the shoulder. But when a pitcher heard those words, it almost always was followed by “tear”. And when a pitcher had a rotator cuff tear, his career was over.

SF Giants reliever Dan Runzler has shoulder tests
Left-hander Dan Runzler’s fortunes with injuries have gone from bad to worse. Now, the Giants are hoping a new setback is not major.
The Chronicle’s John Shea was told today that Runzler is undergoing diagnostic tests on his left shoulder, after he experienced discomfort in a recent bullpen session. The team is expecting to have a better diagnosis and prognosis tomorrow.
The Giants were trying to ease Runzler back from a strained lat muscle that he incurred while pitching in Game 162 last year. He was throwing some good bullpens here in Arizona.
Runzler was expected to vie this spring for the seventh and final spot in the Giants’ bullpen, the decision likely coming down to the need for another lefty (Runzler) or a righty (Clay Hensley).
The Giants still are expected to go into the season with a pair of lefty relievers, Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez. Two additional left-handers, Brian Burres and Eric Surkamp, are going to be stretched out as starters here and could be considered for long relief if the bullpen is further depleted, with right-hander Guillermo Mota able to pitch short.
