    In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports with more than 3.5 million injuries each year, provides All Children's Hospital. The most common injuries are sprains and strains.

    Baseball players in high school have 70 percent higher injury rates compared to softball, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

    Although injury rates in that study of collegiate sports were two to six times higher compared with high school sports, patterns of injury were similar, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Overall, high-school athletes account for an estimated two million injuries, 500,000 physician visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations each year. The actual numbers may be even higher, from research by the CDC and published by All Children's Hospital.

    Sport participation does offer a variety of benefits, but there are also risks to be considered.
