Roads still closed by truck crash; driver says gunfire caused blast
Route 79 northbound between Broadway and the President Avenue area may remain closed through the week as engineers with the state Department of Transportation study structural damage to the highway viaduct caused by a fiery crash Sunday morning. And as the investigation into the crash continued Monday, the driver of the truck that caused the damage said the crash was the result of road rage, including gunfire that hit his vehicle.
Detours have been put in place at the on-ramp to Route 79 North at Broadway and from Interstate 195 eastbound just after the Braga Bridge.
The driver, 42-year-old Luis Cotto, said a black four-door Infiniti that cut him off and then slowed down in front of him, according to WCVB Channel 5 in Boston. Cotto said he flashed his high beams, then the men stopped their car and got out, and he got out of his truck.
Cotto was attacked and then stumbled back to his truck and started driving, he told WCVB, before the men shot at the truck about four times, causing the fuel tank to explode.
