Car accidents Sunday briefly shut down I-93 north, I-495 south
Car accidents on Sunday briefly shut down stretches of two major interstates and sent several people to the hospital.
At around 5:15 on Sunday evening, a tanker truck crashed into a guard rail on Interstate 495 southbound in Boxborough, spilling fuel onto the highway and shutting down the right lane and breakdown lane for three and a half hours.
According to state police, the tanker truck slammed on its brakes after a van stopped short. A tractor trailer crashed into the back of the tanker truck.
The driver of the tanker truck was transported to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Worcester with non-life-threatening injuries.
In Stoneham, a wrong-way driver caused a four-car crash at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night that shut down northbound traffic on Interstate 93 for a half hour and sent four people to Winchester Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
One person has been detained for suspicion of operating under the influence of alcohol.
