Law & Disorder: 'Big, happy guy' dies in motorcycle crash

An early morning Easter crash took the life of a well-liked Atlantic Beach man when he lost control of a motorcycle shortly after leaving Mimi's Sports Grill.

Traffic homicide detective Darrell Edmonds of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said about 3 a.m., Kenneth Ruiter, 26, made a large turn on the bike after leaving Mimi's, then lost control of the vehicle, locked up the front wheel and was thrown off.

The accident occurred in a mostly empty parking lot in a shopping center at Atlantic Boulevard and Aquatic Drive.

Distraught friends, family and employees of Mimi's were gathered in the lot, and cried openly. Employees said Ruiter sometimes helped out as a bouncer at Mimi's.

"He was a good guy," said Mimi's employee Blair Zanin, "friends with everyone at Mimi's and he was very happy. A very big, happy guy."

Zanin said he'd just said goodbye to Ruiter and less than five minutes later, employees were running outside after the crash.

They called 911, but it was already too late. Ruiter died at the scene.
