BAY CITY — The driver of the 1998 Chevrolet involved in a fatal rollover accident in Portsmouth Township early Sunday morning was local race car driver Thomas “J.R.” Syring Jr.
The Michigan State Police have not released the names of the accident’s two victims, but a family member confirmed Syring’s passing Monday afternoon. Syring was 38, according to police.
Police said the passenger in the vehicle was a 33-year-old male. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Syring was a regular in local Figure 8 and Bump’n Grind races held at the Bay County Fairgrounds with the fair’s website listing him as having run there over the last several years. His car number while racing was No. OJR.
Those who knew Syring, said his passing will leave a mark on those in the racing community.
“He was a good guy,” said Kari Van Ochten, former president of the Bay County Fair Board. “He got along with everybody. He had a heart of gold.”
