umm from what i know if people are trapped in the car they have tools and whatnot to assist with getting them out, they are also on standby for any other dangers like if the car catches fire or something, they can assist with first aid and they normal

David Kelly: Red light cameras reduce accidents and save lives

Your Feb. 23 editorial (online Feb. 22), "Proposal to allow cameras at traffic lights misguided," is itself misguided on a number of important points.

First, red-light safety cameras do not invade anyone's privacy, they merely record violations.

They do not indiscriminately record everything in view or record what people are doing inside their vehicles.

Indeed, as the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals noted in a 2009 decision, "No one has a fundamental right to run a red light or avoid being seen by a camera on a public street."

Your editorial also states that red-light cameras cost about $100,000 each. This is simply inaccurate.

The vast majority of industry vendors pay for the installation and maintenance of red-light safety cameras. Most contracts are based on a fixed fee with no tie to the number of violations, and have built-in safeguards to ensure that taxpayers are never left paying for the operation of the program.

There is, however, one statement in your editorial that we are in complete agreement on, that "Running red lights definitely is a hazard to all drivers. It should be discouraged, and the law should be enforced."
