This is a view of the other side of the derailed and burned up streetcar. There is not as much scorching on this side, but there are less people standing around.

    Dangerous RR x-ings

In the last 11 years, 70 people have died in 62 train crossing accidents in Connecticut, according to federal safety statistics.

Often, the same crossings have proven to be the most dangerous. A review of federal rail safety data and accident reports since 1975 by Hearst Connecticut Newspapers found that five rail crossings in Fairfield County were the site of five or more collisions each. One crossing, at Camp Avenue in Darien, had 11. In New Haven County, three accidents involving trains occurred at Division Street in Ansonia and Plains Road in Milford during the same period.

Rail industry officials say the data show the overwhelming cause of these accidents is driver error, often a failure to heed crossing gates and other safety measures. They note the number of rail-crossing accidents has been steadily dropping since the mid-1990s and that any accident is followed by a review of whether additional safety precautions are needed.

But safety advocates say accident investigators are sometimes too quick to blame the motorist or pedestrian and that the system of analyzing accidents is tilted toward blaming the person who got hit.
