Ban on texting while driving sends the right message
Because of the difficulty in enforcement, the city's ban on texting while driving may largely end up being symbolic.
But mayor and council's vote to ban texting while driving, effective April 1, is the right course of action. The ordinance makes it a violation to send or read text messages while a vehicle is moving.
As the Star's Rhonda Bodfield reported, drivers not involved in an accident could receive a minimum civil penalty of $100. The penalty would be at least $250 for drivers who cause accidents because of texting.
The ordinance is modeled after similar language used by the city of Phoenix. Because of its language, it leaves the door open to sending and receiving texts at stoplights because vehicles would not be moving (we hope).
Opponents have argued such texting bans are an overreach of government, but let's reframe this line of thinking. To make such an argument about texting and driving is to argue to put the lives of others at risk in exchange for a right to quick little messages. That's not liberty. It's just foolishness.
