Woman arrested for credit cart info theft
A Santa Maria woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing credit card information from at least 10 people, including some in Solvang, resulting in a total theft of more than $25,000, Santa Maria police said Friday.
Johanne Corteguera, 34, was arrested Feb. 24 at a relative’s home in Santa Barbara County, police said, and the investigation is continuing. She remained at Santa Barbara County Jail Friday with bail set at $70,000.
Corteguera allegedly obtained personal information from victims in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Solvang and Washington state, then used the Internet to obtain credit cards in the victims’ names, transfer funds and make online purchases.
On Feb. 23, detectives with the Santa Maria Police Department and the county Sheriff’s Department served at a search warrant at a home in the 3900 block of Loch Lomond Drive in Orcutt as part of the investigation.
Police advise consumers to guard their personal information carefully. Information on protecting one’s identity can be found at the state Office of Consumer Affairs website, www.dca.ca.gov .
