FedEx truck crash slows traffic on US 74
ELLENBORO — A FedEx tractor-trailer barreled into a bridge off U.S. 74 when its driver fell asleep at the wheel early Thursday, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 4:10 a.m. near mile marker 189 outside Ellenboro in eastern Rutherford County. The driver escaped serious injury, but the impact littered the highway and shoulder with twisted metal and damaged freight, slowing traffic for more than 12 hours.
“It was a blessing he was able to walk away from it,” said Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Spence. “It was a catastrophic collision.”
Joseph Ketron, 36, of Jonesborough, Tenn., was driving the tandem trailer west on U.S. 74 after picking up a load of FedEx freight in Charlotte, Spence said. The vehicle veered off the road and smashed into the Race Path Road overpass.
“All evidence indicates he fell asleep,” Spence said.
Ketron was treated for minor injuries at Cleveland Regional Medical Center and released Thursday, according to the Highway Patrol. Spence said he received a citation for reckless driving.
