...March 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Motor vehicle accidents, whether they are frontal crashes or rear-end crashes, are one of the most prevalent causes of whiplash, a medical condition that may cause chronic pain in some victims.
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is an injury sustained to the neck and/or back. It occurs when the head is "whipped" suddenly forward and backward. Whiplash may cause immediate symptoms like pain and stiffness in the neck, headaches, dizziness, and in extreme cases, numbness or tingling in the extremities. Though most whiplash occurrences take a few days to a few weeks to recover from, some patients experience chronic pain from the injury, requiring months of treatment.
What Causes Whiplash?
Rear-end collisions are the most common causes of whiplash, but frontal crashes, even low-speed ones, can cause this injury. Whiplash is especially prevalent in car crashes because while the body is restrained by seatbelts, the neck and head are able to move freely, resulting in the sudden forward-and-back movement for which whiplash is named.
