Ways to reduce the number of whiplash claims and to bring down car insurance prices in the UK are to be examined at a meeting of ministers, the Huffington Post reports.
The meeting follows last month's announcement of the Transport Select Committee that whiplash claims in the UK have reached levels higher than in any other European country and this has resulted in a rise in insurance premiums. One of the key recommendations that the Committee made was to increase the threshold before whiplash payouts are made.
Transport Secretary Justine Greening set the starting point of the discussion with a statement she made for the Mail on Sunday, in which she revealed that motorists have become more responsible and car accidents happen more rarely than before. Therefore, one might expect insurance premiums to come down but in fact they are soaring, contrary to common logic.
In the UK an average of 1,500 claims are made every day, which makes it "the whiplash capital of Europe", Greening wrote and expressed her firm conviction that action must be taken to change the current state of affairs.
