The statistics and notification about the whiplash related accidents and compensation started only during the 1990′s. And a good accuracy of this notification was only reached after the 2000′s. Before 1997 only the claims which were more than 2500 Euro’s (which is where 80% of the claims are made) were compensated, this is why more than 50% of the whiplash cases were unreported.
The number of whiplash payout claims being made has seen a tremendous increase since 2005. Before 2005 it was almost constant at 0.25 million to 0.29 million claims per year since 2000. However the subsequent years has seen an increase of more than 11% per year, thanks to the number of false claims being made and the aggressive marketing strategy used by the personal injury management companies who are helping these fraudsters. It is also common that these companies call out the blue, to some accident victims even after 2-3 years of the occurrence of the accidents and insist on claiming a whiplash payout even if they did not catch any injury during the time of accident.

The court had heard Ms Bashir, an analyst for the Islamic Bank of Britain, was breast-feeding her new baby boy who will stay with her in jail.
But it later emerged that her parents, Kaneez Akhtar, 60, and Mohammed Bashir, 74 — who were given suspended sentences despite admitting their part in the fraud — were looking after the four month-old.
The court heard the family falsely claimed that Ms Bashir was driving her partner and parents in a Rover which was hit by a BMW, which in turn knocked it into a Peugeot.
The mother-of-two claimed more than £5,000 compensation for whiplash which she falsely claimed she suffered. Insurers had to set aside up to £75,000 for other expected claims.
