Worker's compensation costs in Illinois rank among the highest in the country.
"Even with a 30 percent cut in last year's work comp bill, we're still third-highest in the country," said Mark Denzler, vice president and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association.
What makes Illinois stand out is, an employer in the state is primarily responsible for the aggravation of an injury, Denzler said.
"As it currently rests now, even if the employer is only 1 percent responsible for causing or aggravating an injury, they are responsible for 100 percent of the cost," he said.
Mark Hogle, a senior vice president for the Employers insurance company, reported average claims among states from 2007 to 2010, based on seven days of disability or more.
"The average claim in Illinois was $26,138," Hogle said, speaking from his office in Charlotte, N.C.
"The average of other Midwestern states were Michigan, $14,449; Wisconsin, $20,763, and Indiana, $21,626," said Hogle, citing the Cambridge, Mass.-based Worker's Compensation Research Institute as a source.
