Man Loses Fingers in Lathe Machine Accident at Work

A man lost two fingers in an accident whilst using a lathe machine at work.

The unnamed man was working at an industrial estate in Adlington, near Macclesfield at the time of the incident in March 2010. He was employed by Proseal (UK) Ltd, a company that manufactures machines to seal trays used in the food industry.

The 34 year old worker was using a lathe machine to polish a piece of metal when the accident happened. As he was polishing the spinning metal, his hand got pulled into the machine and he suffered a terrible injury. Parts of two of his fingers (the middle and ring finger) were cut off in the incident.

An investigation by the HSE found that the man was wearing gloves as he was operating the lathe. Wearing gloves while using a lathe is a known safety hazard, but the employee was not given training on how to polish metal safely.

The company was fined £3,500 this week for breaking the Health and Safety Act. A spokesperson for the HSE stated afterwards that the injury could have been easily avoided had health and safety guidelines been followed.
