TAMPA, Fla. -- Bay Area residents are frustrated as their auto insurance rates continue to climb because of Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, fraud. Florida is the number one state when it comes to staged crashes and the Bay Area is at the top of the list for incidents.
It's costing policy holders more than a billion dollars a year in higher premiums.
"I have no tickets, no accidents. My insurance has gone up on the average, $120 a year since I moved here. I'm just under $2,000 a year for automobile insurance," said driver Ginny Zukowski. "It's ridiculous, the cost of insurance, and I don't think it's fair."
As companies pay more in claims, policy holders pay more in premiums. Lynne McChristian with the Insurance Information Institute said it's a huge problem. "The drivers are paying in Florida $58 more per vehicle because of the fraud in the system. And if you look at a typical two-car family, you know you double that, so you're looking at $116 a year," she said.
