Quit work, lose new job: No unemployment
As nearly everyone knows, employees who quit their jobs almost always lose their bids for unemployment compensation benefits.
While there are limited circumstances when employees can receive unemployment compensation after quitting their jobs, they are few and far between. The major one is quitting due to a “good reason caused by the employer” under Minn Stat. sec. 268.095. Others include unremedied harassment, medical necessity and a significant reduction — usually 20 percent or more — in compensation or other benefits.
But one restaurant manager who quit his job suffered multiple losses. After resigning to take another job, the new position fell through, leaving the ex-manager without any position. Then, to make matters worse, he was denied unemployment compensation benefits, too, as a quitter.
The case reflects the difficulties that employees have in seeking unemployment compensation benefits if they quit.
